چکیده

The potential risk of infection due to the biofilm formation on implant surface constitutes one of the drawbacks of hydroxyapatite ossicular chain prostheses. The current study explores the use of chitosan nanoparticles as an antimicrobial agent impregnated in hydroxyapatite to prevent pathogenic colonization and subsequent suboptimal outcomes associated with ossicular reconstruction surgeries. In the current study, chitosan nanoparticles were chemically synthesized in the laboratory using ionic gelation method. Characterization of these nanoparticles was carried out by UVvisible spectrophotometer and maximum absorption was noted at 350nm. SEM analysis revealed spherical morphology of chitosan nanoparticles with size ranging from 45nm to 50 nm. The antimicrobial activity of chitosan nanoparticles was tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, common pathogens associated with ossicular implant infections. Further, models of hydroxyapatite ossicular implants were impregnated with chitosan nanoparticles and checked against the test organisms. A significant reduction in biofilm formation was seen; indicating that chitosan nanoparticles could provide a novel approach in controlling ossicular chain reconstruction prostheses associated infections.

Titanium versus Hydroxyapatite Prostheses: Comparison of Hearing and Anatomical Outcomes after Ossicular Chain Reconstruction.

Objective This study aimed to compare hearing and anatomical outcomes after ossicular chain reconstruction with titanium or hydroxyapatite prostheses. Methods In this study, patients who underwent tympanoplasty and ossicular chain reconstruction with titanium or hydroxyapatite prostheses at a university hospital from January 2007 to February 2013 were retrospectively reviewed; they had a mini...

تغییرات هدایت استخوانی پس از بازسازی زنجیره استخوانچه‌ای گوش میانی

Background & Aim: The most common surgically treatable causes of hearing loss are middle ear diseases among which the greatest effect is related to ossicular chain dysfunction. Successful ossicular chain reconstruction certainly improves air conduction thresholds and closes air-bone gap in audiograms, but the effect of this procedure on bone conduction thresholds has remained to be elucidat...

Feasibility of ossicular chain reconstruction with resin cement.

INTRODUCTION Disjunction of ossicular chain is a common finding in middle ear chronic disease. In addition to ossicular interposition, various materials have been used for reconstruction, such as ceramic prostheses, polyethylene, and titanium. OBJECTIVE Because of the high cost of the available options, the authors propose to reconstruct the ossicular chain with resin cement, a material typic...

[Reconstruction of the conduction mechanism in the middle ear].

Ossicular repositioning and ossicular prostheses are said to offer an oppotunity to preserve the air space of the middle ear and improve the transmission of sound to the stape footplate. Depending upon the pathological circumstances, any convenient remaining portion of the auditory ossicles may be used to reconstruct a functioning ossicular chain. But the problem of reconstruction is not simple...

Factors influencing hearing outcomes in pediatric patients undergoing ossicular chain reconstruction.

OBJECTIVE Ossicular chain disruption in children leads to conductive hearing loss. Few studies have focused on factors influencing successful results in pediatric ossicular chain reconstruction (OCR). We aim to determine whether demographic or surgical factors affect hearing outcomes in pediatric OCR. METHODS We conducted a retrospective chart review of 120 patients undergoing OCR at our inst...
